Gliding Near the TOP
of the North Island

We are located North of Whangarei

We offer great thermal gliding near the top of the North Island. Being located on the narrow part of the Island, you’ll see both the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean at the same time while gliding.

Our West Coast has a section of coastal cliffs and sand dunes, which are soarable in westerly conditions for distances in excess of 150 kms: that's nearly 80 nautical miles. You can do a Gold Distance flight, out and return here.

The Northland Gliding Club Airstrip is at Puhi Puhi, 25 km north of Whangarei, in New Zealand.

Club Aircraft & Facilities

The Northland Gliding Club owns three, two seat gliders. The aircraft are an ASK13, Janus, and a Grob 109B motor glider.

The club has a comfortable Club House and facilities for group events.

Glider Launch

We use a 380 hp winch mounted on the back of a tractor to launch gliders up to an altitude of around 2,200 feet. We have been able to get craft up to 2,900 feet on a good pull with gliders that can take the power.

Visiting Pilots Please Note

Watch for Live Stock on Air Strip

The Northland Gliding Club field and airstrip is part of a working dairy farm and at times is populated with livestock. And even when stock is cleared, there is always a possibility of a stray animal being on the air strip. Therefore please use extra caution and contact the club before flying into our facilities.
